PRESERVING THE PAST: Restoration of the 18th Century Charleston County Historic Courthouse published in ICRI’s CRB September – October 2025 Issue.

SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc. was the engineer of record on this comprehensive, team-focused restoration project of the Historic Charleston County Courthouse. David Tepke, PE and Neal Frasier, PE along with Kalen McNabb of Meadors Inc., Dipayan Jana of Construction Materials Consultants Inc., and Paul Wood, PE of Charleston County Facilities Department were contributors to the article. The article discusses key aspects of assessment, design and exterior restoration completed between 2018 and 2024 to address safety concerns and implement historically sensitive repairs for preserving the Historic Courthouse.

Charleston County Courthouse is in the historic downtown district and was constructed in the late 1750’s. Stucco and coating distress had worsened based on suspected water intrusion. SKA was engaged to develop an evaluation plan to evaluate moisture issues and distress to design coating and stucco repairs which included a facade evaluation to address potential loose stucco. SKA prepared a plan and coordinated efforts through BAR approval and conducted the evaluation through a current contract in the interest of developing repairs and developed repairs to preserve this important structure. SKA provided construction administration and field observation managing the repair process to ensure proper insulation from water intrusion.
