At the APWA NC 2018 Facilities & Grounds Conference, Dave Tepke, PE, of SKA and Danny Briggs, EI, CDT of the City of Greensboro Water Resources Department will share a recent project case study: Mitchell Water Treatment Plant Phase 1 Structural Remediation. The talk focuses on condition assessment of a water treatment plant constructed in the 1950’s including interior building components and exterior basins. Phase 1 (interior) building repairs included replacement of an interior building slab at and around the hypochlorite room with distress and deterioration from chemical contamination and corrosion of reinforcement. Dave shares how high-performance concrete proportioned to address shrinkage and permeability was used for the new slab. The talk also discusses supplemental strengthening of a slab supporting ferric sulfate tanks and other repairs to extend the service life of the structure. The repairs were part of a comprehensive renovation to the structure that included three design firms and other concurrent upgrades. Project highlights, challenges and coordination will be discussed.
