SKA was retained by the NC Dept. of Public Safety to design repairs and a roof recover system for their 1000 bed adult correctional facility. The Alexander Correctional Institution complex consists of approximately 20 roof areas comprising 287,000+ sf of roof area. The roof areas range from single floor height up to 60 feet in height. Portions of the existing roof were experiencing leakage during rain events, specifically at the medical wing and in the industry shop. The existing roof system consisted of a multi-ply gravel surfaced built-up roof over lightweight insulating concrete (LWIC) over precast concrete double tee roof deck. SKA removed core samples at various locations near reported leakage locations to determine the extent of damage to the existing of the existing roof assembly and to determine if there was entrapped moisture in the LWIC. Based on the observations made at the core locations and the information contained in previous reports SKA designed a new roof recover system that met the needs of the Client and the facility.
