Atrium Health is a multi-story masonry structure with sections of the building constructed in the 1930’s, 1950’s, and 1980’s.  The building has experienced a history of masonry distress conditions and moisture intrusion problems. SKA prepared phase 1 design documents to address immediate concerns with (4) masonry stair towers on the building.  Repairs included moisture protection, through wall flashings, window flashings, supplemental masonry securement, shelf angle repairs, repointing, veneer replacement, and some EIFS cladding. SKA also provided construction administration services and structural design services for support of scaffolding above the existing multi-level roof systems.

During phase 2, SKA assisted with design to reclad the 8-story section of the building, which was constructed in the 1980’s. New masonry shelf angles, through wall flashings and window flashings were designed. The design also included masonry repairs, sealant replacement, lintel replacement, and flashings associated with the 1930 and 1950 vintage sections of the building. SKA provided ASTM testing of the masonry to determine the extent of moisture migration through the mass masonry walls. During construction, SKA provided ASTM and AAMA field water spray testing of the fenestration systems.
