SKA provided structural and MEP design services for the expansion of GKN’s Mebane Plant. The project scope for this 24,000 sf warehouse addition included a pre-engineered metal building located at the front of the original manufacturing facility. As part of the design considerations, 30’-0” clear height requirements were set for the high bay racking system. Other design elements were double pitched clear span roof, new loading docks with dock levelers and seals, re-configuring existing main building at the interface with the new addition connector to provide open access between existing spaces and new, addition of a single-story receiving office with a waiting area and restrooms. The building required the use of a rammed aggregate pier soil improvement system below the foundations and slab to help minimize the risk of differential slab and building movement. This is of particular importance for proper operation of the high speed, cable guided, electric fork lifts that will serve the space.
