SKA has provided engineering design services for the Greensboro Coliseum for the past 50 years. The projects have ranged widely in type and size from minor maintenance improvements to major renovations such as the 1993 expansion and the recent Upper concourse expansion project. During the 1993 expansion, SKA engineered an outside the box structural solution that enabled the project to be completed within the very tight budget constraints. The solution involved removing the existing arena roof structure and utilizing it for the roof of the Special Events Center expansion. This reuse of existing trusses, beams, and other framing elements played a huge role in the schedule and cost impacts to the project and ultimately allowed the job to be completed. This unique and creative solution also enabled the architects to improve site lines and more freely arrange the seating of the expanded upper seating bowl by installing an entirely new roof framing and support grid.
