Lake Tabor is a reservoir located near Tabor City, in Columbus County, NC. Lake Tabor is retained primarily by an earth and concrete dam on the south end of the Lake. The dam includes steel sheet piles and a concrete dam and spillway structure. Portions of the steel sheet piles are exposed on the downstream face of the dam.  SKA performed a condition survey of the concrete dam and spillway structure. Exposed sections of the dam are exhibiting distress and weathering conditions, including corrosion of the steel sheet piles and localized spalling/scaling distress on the concrete dam and spillway structures. The dam sustained damage during Hurricane Matthew. SKA provided remedial design and construction documents for localized, partial-depth concrete repairs at existing scaled and damaged sections of the concrete cap; application of a protective coating on existing non-air-entrained concrete cap to reduce the potential for freeze-thaw damage in the future; pressure injection of poly-urethane sealant into existing cracks in concrete cap; application of a surface-seal to a leaking butt joint between adjacent sheet piles; address localized corrosion of sheet piles by repairing or modifying the existing corrosion preventative coating system, and construction of new concrete wing walls, approximately 10 to 15 feet in length, on both ends of the existing concrete dam/spillway structure to address overtopping concerns.
