SKA was retained by Odell Associates Inc. to provide building envelope design peer review and commissioning services for the new Liberty University Basketball Arena and building envelope design peer review for the Football Operations Center. The services included review of construction design of the building envelope for both buildings, which included curtainwall and storefront windows, precast stone, brick masonry, composite metal panels, glass canopies, and roofing as well as commissioning during construction. The arena consists of a new 4,500 seat arena for the University located adjacent to and abutting the existing Vines Arena on campus. The new $65M arena is 113,000 sf of space consisting of an event level, concourse level, and club level. SKA performed full-service building envelope commissioning for the envelope components at Liberty University’s New Arena and Football Operations Center. During the design phase SKA performed a document review of the building envelope components of the facilities, providing value-driven recommendations that facilitated the design package and construction budget. SKA also provided construction monitoring services and quality assurance testing to ensure and verify proper installation of the designed components. The testing services included: air & water on fenestrations, air leakage for air barriers, and sealant joint adhesion.
On behalf of the architect, SKA provided full building envelope commissioning from peer review in the design stage through on-site observations at critical times during construction. We actively resolved issues related to the building envelope for the design team and tracked deficiency logs with each construction trade. On behalf of the owner, SKA performed quality assurance testing of the installed air barrier, windows, and sealant joints. Photo 4 is an ASTM E1186 Chamber Smoke Test.
