SKA has worked continuously for Thomas Built Buses in High Point, North Carolina, since 2007, with 114 projects over 13 years. Being an established company, TBB’s need for engineering design services has been focused on maintenance and upgrades to existing facilities. SKA has provided a broad range of structural, mechanical, electrical, and building envelope services. During this time a couple of new construction projects have been designed, one at the TBB Courtesy Road Plant in 2008 and another in 2020-21 at the TBB Fairfield Road Plant.

In 2008, SKA provided all building engineering design services for a replacement building for one of the oldest sections of the TBB Courtesy Road Plant through which the main production line passed. The replacement was a one story 11,900 sf steel framed structure with complicated requirements for foundations, roof framing support, and building envelope. In 2020, SKA provided preliminary planning and design development for all building engineering design services for an addition to the TBB Fairfield Road Plant. The addition consisted of two separate buildings at each end of the plant, one 10,000 sf addition and one 20,000 sf addition. This project was put on hold due to the COVID-19 but several smaller projects were continued and included a coating pump room addition, chiller plant expansion, an exterior work shelter, and an interior office mezzanine. SKA electrical engineers began an Arc Flash Study at Plant C2, while mechanical engineers provided C2 Plant Undercoating Building Toilet Renovations. Structural and mechanical engineers are providing consulting on C2 Plant Robot Controller Mezzanine.

SKA provided structural and MEP engineering on the C2 Electric Vehicle Charging Station Expansion which included additions at the north ends of the northwest and northeast wings of the plant. The two additions matched the 50 foot by 50 foot structural bay size and single-story structural type of the existing plant, along with duplicating the existing floor, wall, and roof types, and included the following floor areas: northwest 8 bays (20,000 sf) and northeast 4 bays (10,000 sf). SKA provided structural and MEP engineering for construction of a loading dock addition at the C2 Plant. The addition consisted of a 1,300 sf of platform and roof covering art of the currently open space between the Adhesive Storage Room and the Undercoat Pump Room. The project scope included sprinkler protection, canopy area lighting with LED light features and integral occupancy sensors, distributed 120V electrical power and receptacles.
