SKA teamed with Italian dog food maker Farmina and O&M Inženjering Group, who are based in Serbia, on the new Farmina manufacturing facility in Reidsville, NC. The new manufacturing facility will be 174,000 square feet when completed in 2024. SKA is providing structural engineering services on this project.
SKA was tasked with review, evaluation, and integration of the two primary manufacturing material silos and equipment into the NC State Building Code and become the engineer of record for the silos. SKA worked closely with Farmina and O&M Inženjering Group to convert and adopt the Eurocode based silo designs and materials into the International Building Code based NC code requirements. During the process, some modifications were required to the initial design to meet the seismic requirements of IBC.
SKA also assisted Farmina and the Contractor address some construction deficiencies and tolerance issues that arose during the construction. One issue that arose with very highly loaded anchor bolts that were damaged was solved with creative problem solving utilizing non-traditional coupling mechanisms. SKA worked with material suppliers to design and implement a solution and performed load verification testing on the unique solution to prove adequacy before implementation. This solution resulted in significant time and cost savings to the project.
