SKA Consulting Engineers

Structural & MEP Engineers in Greensboro, NC

SKA Consulting Engineers started in Greensboro in 1957, when John V. Sutton opened a one-man structural engineering practice here. Robert G. Kennerly, Sr. joined as a partner the following year and the firm became Sutton-Kennerly & Associates, the name it carried until 2012, when branch offices made a name tied to the services rather than the founders the better fit. Greensboro has been headquarters through all of it, and it still is. You can read the full company history if you want the longer version.

Today the office sits at 7900 Triad Center Drive. Structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers work out of this building alongside our building science and forensic investigation teams, which means most projects in the Triad can be handled start to finish without leaving the office.

Engineering services in Greensboro

Owners call this office for one of two reasons. Either there is a building going up and it needs structural and MEP design, or there is a building already standing that leaks, cracks, or does not perform the way it should, and someone needs to find out why.

For new construction and renovation we provide structural engineering, mechanical and electrical and plumbing design, commissioning, and peer review. For existing buildings we handle building envelope and roofing assessments, waterproofing and leak investigation, concrete corrosion evaluation, lighting and electrical system upgrades, and forensic structural investigation.

Local project experience

Our engineers have worked on much of what Greensboro uses every week. We provided engineering for the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts and for the Greensboro Coliseum, including its roof. At the Melvin Municipal Office Building we worked on the city’s own offices. We have engineered pools and aquatics facilities for the city, including the Greensboro Aquatic Center training pool and electrical testing across four municipal pools.

At UNC Greensboro our work spans the campus: the Nursing and Instructional Building, the soccer stadium, the Oakland Parking Deck, the Brown Building renovation, lighting upgrades in the Cone Art Building, and the Quad dormitories. We have also worked at NC A&T on the Eric Building, at GTCC on the Aviation Center, and for Guilford County Schools at Lindley Elementary.

Outside the city we have engineered the High Point University parking deck, plant renovations for Thomas Built Buses, the Forsyth County Courthouse parking deck, corporate hangars at Smith Reynolds Airport, and schools for Winston-Salem Forsyth County, Rockingham County, and Uwharrie Charter Academy.

The area we cover

Greensboro is the right first call for projects across the Triad and central North Carolina: Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Burlington, Asheboro, and the counties around them. For work in Charlotte, the Triangle, the mountains, or South Carolina, one of our other offices is likely closer, and we will point you there.
