Books N Brunch – Never Split the Difference

We had a great book club discussion: Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It! Sarah Spangler, our HR Coordinator summarized the following:

The conversation sparked thoughtful dialogue around how we approach negotiation, common pitfalls we often run into, and actionable tactics we can bring into both formal negotiations like contracts and vendor conversations and the more informal ones we navigate every day.

A few key highlights stood out from our discussion:
1. Negotiation is less about winning and more about understanding.
When someone feels understood, they feel safer, and when they feel safer, they are more likely to be open, honest, and collaborative. If a conversation feels like a competition of words, people are far less likely to be open to what you are saying or even honest.

2. A quick “yes” is not always the goal.
We talked about how “no” can actually be the beginning of a more honest conversation. Giving someone room to say no can help them feel more in control, surface real concerns, and lead to stronger commitment in the long run. A quick “yes” often does not come with true emotional buy-in and follow through.

3. The best questions create dialogue, not defensiveness.
Calibrated questions like “How can we make this work?” or “What am I missing?” can shift a conversation from confrontation to collaboration. They help uncover hidden information and invite the other person into problem-solving with you.

Whether you are navigating a high-stakes hostage negotiation (hopefully not on your average Tuesday), a contract conversation with a vendor, or a low-key decision with your spouse about where to eat dinner, this book has something practical to offer.

It comes highly recommend adding it to your reading list!
