SKA Consulting Engineers has been engineering buildings in the Southeast since 1957, when John V. Sutton opened a one-man structural practice in Greensboro, North Carolina. The firm has grown to seven offices across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Charlotte is our office for the largest and fastest-growing market in the Carolinas.
Every SKA office works the same way. Structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers are in the same firm as our building enclosure, roofing, testing, and forensic investigation teams, so a project in the Charlotte metro can be designed, investigated, and repaired by people who already work together. The longer version is on our history page.
Engineering services in Charlotte
Owners, architects, and contractors call this office for one of two reasons. Either a building is going up or being renovated and it needs structural and MEP design, or a building is already standing and it leaks, cracks, or does not perform the way it should, and someone needs to find out why.
For new construction and renovation we provide structural engineering, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design, commissioning, and peer review. For existing buildings we handle building enclosure and roofing assessments, waterproofing and leak investigation, concrete and corrosion evaluation, structural repair, and forensic investigation, backed by our own testing division.
Who we work with in the Charlotte metro
Much of our work is for hospitals and health systems, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, cities and counties, parking deck owners, and multi-family developers. We also engineer churches, historic buildings, industrial plants, airports, and athletic and aquatic facilities. Across the firm that adds up to more than 1,000 parking structures and more than 1,000 municipal projects. You can browse the markets we serve or the project portfolio.
The pace of construction here means the office sees a lot of new high-rise, multi-family, and parking structure design, alongside enclosure and corrosion work on buildings from the last few decades that are starting to show their age. Our aviation work includes Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The area we cover
Charlotte is the first call for projects in Mecklenburg County and the counties around it: Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, Mooresville, Monroe, and across the state line into Rock Hill and Fort Mill.
For work outside that area, one of our other offices is probably closer, and we will point you to it.
